Our Founding Story

 Kennedy’s Koalas was founded by twin sisters Finley and Emersyn Cross with one simple goal: to help children who are grieving the loss of an unborn sibling feel less alone.


Before Finley and Emersyn were born, their family experienced the heartbreaking loss of their sister, Kennedy. On January 7, 2007, just three days before her due date, Kennedy passed away due to a heart valve condition that interrupted the flow of oxygenated blood to her body.


As Finley and Emersyn grew older, they learned about their sister Kennedy and the lasting impact her loss had on their family. Over time, they began to recognize something deeply important — when a baby is lost during pregnancy or before birth, siblings experience grief too. Children may not always fully understand that loss, but they still feel the absence, the sadness, and the change within their family.


At sixteen years old, Finley and Emersyn created Kennedy’s Koalas as a way to bring comfort, compassion, and connection to children walking through similar grief.


Through the gift of a stuffed koala, they hope to remind grieving children that they are seen, supported, loved, and never alone.


Every koala shared is sent in memory of Kennedy and in honor of every child and family navigating the difficult journey of sibling loss.

At Kennedy's Koalas, we believe no child should face loss alone. Our mission is to help grieving siblings through a difficult time.

How Kennedy's Koalas Works

Step 1: Share your Story

Families & friends can nominate a child who has experienced the loss of a sibling. 


We ask each submission to include:

  • The recipient child’s first name and age 
  • A brief description of their loss 
  • The mailing information for the recipient 
  • The relationship of the person submitting the request

Step 2: Review with Care

Every story is personally reviewed by our team to ensure each koala is sent to a child who aligns with our mission of supporting sibling grief and loss. Because our resources are limited, we thoughtfully prioritize children and families experiencing recent or significant sibling loss. 

Step 3: Prepare a Comfort Package

Once approved, we carefully prepare a Kennedy’s Koalas comfort package, including:

  • A stuffed koala 
  • A personal note of encouragement 

Each package is assembled with love and compassion in memory of Kennedy. 

Step 4: Send the Koala

The koala is shipped directly to the child or family, offering a tangible reminder that they are not alone in their grief. 

 

For many children, the koala becomes:

  • a comfort item 
  • a bedtime companion 
  • a reminder of love and connection

Step 5: Continue the Mission

Families, donors, and volunteers help us continue Kennedy’s legacy by sponsoring future koalas, sharing stories, and supporting grieving children across communities.
